Could Your Personal Care Products Be Harming Your Health?

In our quest for healthier lifestyles, we often focus on what we eat and how we exercise, but have you ever considered the impact of what you put on your skin?

Personal care products are a daily part of our routines, yet many of them contain chemicals that could be doing more

harm than good. It’s time to take a closer look at the ingredients in your beauty and hygiene products and shop with mindfulness and awareness.

The Hidden Dangers in Your Daily Routine

Research conducted by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) reveals that the average woman uses 12 personal care products daily, exposing themselves to over 168 different chemical ingredients.

Our skin, the body's largest and highly absorbent organ, acts as a gateway for these chemicals to enter our bloodstream and accumulate in our tissues.

The old adage "you are what you eat" could be expanded to include "you are what you wear," as the products we apply can have a profound impact on our health.

Shockingly, cosmetics and personal care products are among the least regulated consumer products, with many harmful ingredients still widely available despite being banned in countries like the European Union.

While the European Union has taken a proactive approach by banning many harmful ingredients in cosmetics, the United States has been slower to regulate these products. However, progress is being made.

California, in particular, has implemented laws such as the Toxic-Free Cosmetics Act (AB 2762) and the Cosmetic Fragrance and Flavor Ingredient Right to Know Act (SB 312) to ban certain toxic chemicals and increase transparency.

Despite these advances, many potentially harmful chemicals are still widely available in personal care products.

Here’s a closer look at some of the most concerning ingredients:

  • Fragrances: The term “fragrance” on a label can be a catch-all for numerous undisclosed chemicals, some of which can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions and other health issues. These ingredients are often hidden to “protect proprietary formulas”, but they can be harmful.

  • Formaldehyde: A known carcinogen, linked to respiratory issues and skin irritation. Used as a preservative in soaps, shampoos, and cosmetics, often hidden under different names like quaternium-15.

  • Mercury: Can cause severe damage to the kidneys and nervous system, sometimes found in skin lightening products and mascara.

  • Phthalates: These hormone disrupting group of chemicals are used to soften skin and dissolve other ingredients. Despite being linked to reproductive health issues and birth defects, often disguised as "fragrance" on labels.

  • Parabens: Widely used as preservatives to prevent mold and bacteria growth in cosmetics, linked to breast cancer and reproductive and developmental problems, due to their estrogen-mimicking properties.

  • Triclosan: Despite being banned from hand soaps, it remains in many toothpastes and sanitizers, posing risks to thyroid function, hormone regulation, can contribute to antibotic resistance, and linked to skin cancer.

  • PFAS (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances): Known as "forever chemicals”, as they are unable to detox from the body once absorbed. These are found in water-resistant cosmetics and have been linked to various cancers and immune system disruption.

  • Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS): Commonly used in shampoos and soaps to create foam, SLS can strip the skin of natural oils, leading to dryness and allergic reactions.

  • Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA) and Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT): These preservatives are known to disrupt the endocrine system and have been linked to liver, thyroid, and kidney problems.

  • Lead: Found in some lipsticks, tampons, and hair dyes, lead exposure can result in cognitive impairment and reproductive toxicity.

How to Shop Mindfully and Protect Your Health

Awareness is the first step in making safer choices for yourself and your loved ones.

Here’s how you can shop with mindfulness and reduce your exposure to harmful chemicals:

  1. Read Labels Carefully: Become familiar with common toxic ingredients and check labels diligently. If you come across unfamiliar terms, take the time to research them.

  2. Choose Fragrance-Free Products: Opt for products that are labeled as “fragrance-free” or those that use natural essential oils instead of synthetic fragrances.

  3. Support Transparent Brands: Look for companies that prioritize ingredient transparency and have committed to eliminating harmful chemicals from their products.

  4. Use Research Tools: Utilize resources like the EWG’s Skin Deep database or the Think Dirty app to assess the safety of products before purchasing.

  5. Avoid Marketing Gimmicks: Terms like “natural” and “hypoallergenic” are not regulated and can be misleading. Trust the ingredients list over marketing claims.
